One of the closest finishes ever at Holmefield saw Court House Casuals beat BBB when Will Silk ran three off the last ball. The field had been placed to save the four and when Silk’s blow made its way to Dave Ashton a tie looked inevitable. Ian Harris who had been allocated the final over by captain Reynolds received the ball from Ashton and threw at the stumps as Silk and Bull set off for the third. The overthrow gave victory to the Casuals. Several complex arguments were made as to why the course of action had been taken; even the ex- Loughborough student could have walked the three paces in the time it took Silk to complete his third run. Ian was undergoing psychological therapy for the rest of the evening.
The setting for the game was a credit to Mick and Doug with Doug also performing the umpiring duties in a very professional manner along side John Aspinall. The postmaster was Bolton’s top scorer with 36 and the total of 234 looked enough for a Bolton win.
The Casuals’ captain, Edward Aspinall, opened and with six fours and three sixes scored 57. Wickets tumbled until Silk and Bull came together and put on an unbeaten 139 for the 8th wicket.
